A satirical sketch in which Donald Trump misspells “Niger” on his upcoming speech about African immigrants — created by the author
Donald Trump misspelling “Niger” — Black and white sketch by Robert Archerd (the author)

It’s an odd-sounding premise, but some background should help clarify it.

I’ve been on to Mexico City’s hiding-in-plain-sight-secret for over 50 years, so why write about it now? What’s to be gained by exposing a neighboring country’s dirty laundry?

Perhaps now, in the wake of our 2024 presidential election, such exposure may help people understand why so many Hispanic (Latino) men voted for the candidate considered toughest on border policy — as well as for being unapologetically racist, even a white supremacist. And why this concern is only about one (the southern) border.

Several demographics must share partial responsibility (i.e., blame) for reelecting Donald Trump, presidential historians’ 2024 official choice as our worst president ever (and, for me, definitely the worst president in my lifetime). Among them are white women, who, with their bodily autonomy on the chopping block, still mostly (53%) voted for Trump; white evangelical Christians, who make up roughly a fifth of America’s population, overwhelmingly (80%) voted for Trump); Black men under 45, whose support for Trump doubled since 2020; and Hispanic men, with 54% voting for Trump in 2024, up from just 36% in 2020!
