My masters thesis back in the mid 1960s dealt precisely with this unfairness, Steve. And being that my mother was her UCLA graduating class's valedictorian helped my success immeasurably when I, too, began at UCLA in 1958, as she taught me study techniques designed both for optimal learning as well as for getting good grades (2 skills that are not necessarily always aligned).
