A Democracy in Freefall
Who thought destroying it could be this easy?
“Everyone who works for President Trump: Quit now. Save your souls. Save your honor, such as it is. Save your reputation, such as it remains …Trump has demonstrated repeatedly, …, that he doesn’t care (about our democracy) and won’t defend his country.
“If you work for this man and you call yourself a patriot, it is time for you to go.
“This may sound excessive, even irresponsible. Indeed, … I have agonized over the question of public service in the age of Trump.”
Reading like a freshly minted warning, the above is an excerpt from a July 16, 2018, editorial by Washington Post columnist and associate editor Ruth Marcus. But while the red lights flashed even then, the man is infinitely more dangerous now. Read on.
Dealing with a broken system — Oh, I get it. Our system is not working as intended; our democratic form of government is providing neither the protections nor the services we have every right to expect. And those elected to answer to our needs are not doing the job.
But, ultimately, whose fault is it? If our elected representatives are not answering to us, we can’t sit back and expect someone else to fix our broken system; That responsibility falls squarely upon us!
